Gunshots ring out at Eastgate Mall

Their target is to establish a road map for a deal, perhaps more than two years away.

The question is whether the world of soaring temperatures, rising oceans and deadly droughts can afford such patience.

It seems the stubbornness and lack of will by politicians to agree on climate protection takes precedence for the time being over the forces of nature. Back to headlines .

The strange case of the ex-editor with Scottish blood who just can't ...

KELVIN MacKenzie likes to consider himself a latter-day "hammer of the Scots".

The former editor of the Sun seized his chance on the BBC's Question Time programme on Thursday evening to tear into Scotland once again, this time claiming there were no entrepreneurs left north of the Border and all the Scots wanted to do was spend the money made by others.

25 million exposed to risk of ID fraud

The sensitive personal details of 25 million Britons could have fallen into the hands of identity fraudsters after a government agency lost the entire child benefit database in the post.

A major police investigation is being conducted after Alistair Darling, the Chancellor, admitted yesterday that names, addresses, birth dates, national insurance numbers and bank account details of every child benefit claimant in the country had gone missing.

The confidential material is on two CDs that were placed in the post by a junior employee at the HM Revenue & Customs office in Tyne & Wear more than a month ago and have not been seen since.

The Chancellor and the Prime Minister have known about the loss since November 10 but there were concerns last night that the police were not told for a further five days and the banking industry was not alerted until last Friday.

Gas Prices Dip at the Pump

A little early Christmas gift for motorists when they head to the pump, gas prices are going down.

The national average price for gasoline is $3.00. That's a drop of about 9 cents over the last three weeks.

Locally, a gallon of regular unleaded will cost you $3.28, down a penny from last week.

Analysts attribute the decrease to a drop in the price of a barrel of crude oil.

HMRC leak raises prospect of new data rules

The loss of two discs containing the confidential details of over 25 million child benefit recipients, including their bank and social security details, has been widely viewed as the worst breach to have occurred in the UK, and forced the resignation of HMRC chairman Paul Gray. Calls for tighter security controls across the public and private sectors have been heard from all corners in the wake of the incident.

"Searching questions need to be answered about systems, procedures and human error inside both HMRC and the National Audit Office," said Information Commissioner Richard Thomas. He advised organisations to address security and data protection safeguards "with the utmost vigour" in light of the breach.

Alex Brown, a partner at international law firm Simmons & Simmons, said the incident will "turn the spotlight on the enforcement process" of the Data Protection Act, adding that the current process is too lenient.

All CHB records to be computerised by I-Day

Huge piles of data files pertaining to records of the Chandigarh Housing Board are being digitised for easier access and customer satisfaction. Of the approximately 40 lakh data entries pertaining to accounts of nearly 45,000 flats, more than 22 lakh are accessible on the click of the mouse. By Independence Day, all records are scheduled to be on the software.

It is worth pointing out that the data transfer pertains to at least 115 schemes of the CHB floated since 1976. The data compilation is being done by the UTI Bank on the programme prepared by the SPIC. There are at least 45,000 CHB flats whose data is under process. Although only a little more than half of the data requires active perusal of the board, yet all the data is being transferred to help in property related cases to old flats, Mr Amar Nath, Chief Executive Officer of the CHB, said.
