Program At Westerly High Offers Pupils Taste Of Culinary Concepts

Grades are based on effort-related factors, such as attendance, participation and sanitation.

"I don't grade them on the taste of the food," Finkelstein said.

Next semester, when he has his advanced students, Finkelstein said he hopes to open the Highland Grille every day, instead of twice a week. But even with the limited openings, the public is welcome to dine at the Grille with 24 hours' advance notice.

In the meantime, teachers and administrators will continue to take advantage of the convenient and tasty fare.

"It's a lot easier than having to bring my lunch, and the food's good too," teacher Melissa Stoehr said.

"It's something the Westerly High School is extremely proud of," Spellman added.

Diners can contact Finkelstein at (401) 315-1563 or jfinkelstein@westerly.k12.ri.us.

Dalai Lama to speak at U-M on Earth Day

The 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet will deliver a special lecture at University of Michigan to coincide with Earth Day.

The April 20, 2008, lecture at Crisler Arena will be free and open to the public, although advanced reservations are required.

The Dalia Lama, an outspoken advocate for human rights and global peace, last visited Ann Arbor in 1994 drawing a crowd of 9,000 people at Crisler Arena. The Buddhist leader's commitment to freedom and tolerance, and his opposition to violence in resolving conflict have earned him numerous awards, including the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize.

Brown facing revolt as more personal data disappears in internal mail

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), yesterday confirmed it was looking for another lost package containing six discs, which went missing in the post after being sent on October 10 from a tax credit office in Preston to its Whitehall HQ in London. The discs held recordings of phone conversations between an individual tax credit claimant and an HMRC helpline.

Last week the revelation that personal details of 25 million people contained on two computer discs had gone missing after being posted by HMRC sparked outrage, with the Conservatives describing it as a "catastrophic failure".

A newly published poll has suggested that the series of crises - which includes the handling of the run on Northern Rock - has wiped out Labour's reputation as the best party to handle the economy and damaged Prime Minister Gordon Brown's standing with voters.

Mid-Missourians targets for identity theft scams

Residents of central Missouri are reportedly being targeted by identity thieves trying to get their bank information.

A release sent out by Attorney General Jay Nixon's office on Wednesday said people in mid-Missouri have been receiving phone calls from a phishing scam group claiming to be with Central Bank.

According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Web site, phishing refers to “a scam that encompasses fraudulently obtaining and using an individual's personal or financial information."

The scam tells people that there is something wrong with their bank account, the release said. In some cases, the automated phone call instructs people to go to a Web site and enter their bank account information. In other cases, a live caller asks for the information directly.

Mineral WellsSenior Salute was not an embarrassment
Dear Editor,This letter is in response to, "There's more to the band salute than first stated." I am one of the seniors who did the salute at the Nov. 9 Senior Night/last game in Miller Stadium. It's my duty to inform the public of what happened prior to that event. The day of the last game, we were in the band hall about to leave for the game when the director started to give us his "Prior Game Speech." He was talking about how it's the last game in Miller Stadium and how we will always remember the last game forever. He said he had heard "rumors" about a "senior prank." He told the band that if anything was done to embarrass the band, that there would be consequences.Well, at halftime we did our Senior Salute (for those who didn't see it, it's available online).
