Fuel Tank Issue Delays Shuttle Flight Until at Least January

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., Dec. 9 — NASA on Sunday delayed the launching of the space shuttle Atlantis until at least Jan. 2 to give engineers time to diagnose and fix its balky fuel tank sensors.

The flight, originally scheduled for Thursday and then rescheduled for Sunday, was given its latest postponement when one of four critical sensors in the liquid hydrogen section of the external tank malfunctioned during early morning fueling.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration officials said at a news conference that technicians would try to isolate and repair the problem while the Atlantis stayed on its launching pad here at the Kennedy Space Center. If the issue requires a rolling back of the shuttle to its hangar for repairs, the new launching date probably would slip later into January, said LeRoy Cain, head of the mission management team.

Failure was an option!

Immigrant Bill Hurts Martinez at Poll": Senate GOP Grand Bargaineer Mel Martinez's approval ratings have "plunged" from 48 to 37 percent approval in his state, Florida--an all-time low for him, reports the Orlando Sentinel. ... Could a Democratic presidential candidate actually use the Bush immigration bill's unpopularity to win Florida's toss-up electoral votes in 2008? .. . [Thanks to emailer P.S.] 9:40 P.M.

Balzbusters! Politico's Roger Simon joins the backlash against pompous Dan Balz CW! Like Jacob Weisberg, Simon argues that, when it comes to "comprehensive immigration reform," failure is a pretty good option. ... Apple stores raise bar with 'geniuses'

The store, Apple's second-biggest in the United States, has an entire floor dedicated to customer service and technical help, a key focus for the company and one that has helped drive sales growth.

“What the Apple stores do is give customers a place to come and feel and touch the products, and more importantly, talk to someone who knows the products intimately," said Tim Bajarin, president of Creative Strategies, a consultancy. “That just does not exist well in the PC side. You can't get a similar experience at Best Buy or Circuit City," Bajarin said.

Apple met widespread scepticism when it opened its first stores in 2001, as many analysts scratched their heads at the company's entry into an unfamiliar business. But the strategy has paid off in a big way.

Casto, who spoke to the Sweetwater Lions Club recently about identity theft concerns, said he hopes the forum will turn into a classic discussion of what people are concerned about.
