Officials: Take action to prevent identity theft

Anyone can become a victim of identity theft. Each year, identity theft affects about 9 million Americans, according to information released by the Federal Trade Commission. In fact, the problem is so widespread that President George W. Bush recently commissioned a task force to identify solutions to the issue. The April 2007 report, titled "Combating Identity Theft: A Strategic Plan," concluded that reducing opportunities for identity theft and increasing public awareness were two of the most vital steps in reducing the number of victims."Only a comprehensive and fully coordinated strategy to combat identity theft — one that encompasses effective prevention, public awareness and education, victim assistance, and law enforcement measures, and that fully engages federal, state, and local authorities and the private sector — will have any chance of solving the problem," the report said.Last year, more than 17,700 fraud and identity theft cases were reported in Florida, according to a recent press release from the Florida Attorney General's Office.

December 2007

We have seen this ruthless enemy firsthand, and its global ambitions are undeniable. This struggle, the Long War, will probably take decades to prosecute. Failure is not an option.

Second, whether or not we like it, Iraq is central to that fight. We cannot walk away from our strategic interests in the region. Iraq cannot become a staging ground for Islamic extremism or be dominated by other powers in the region, such as Iran and Syria. A premature or precipitous withdrawal from Iraq, without the requisite stability and security, is likely to cause the violence there -- which has decreased substantially but is still present -- to cascade into an even larger humanitarian crisis.

Third, the counterinsurgency campaign led by Gen. David Petraeus is the correct approach in Iraq.

A sheriff's spokesman has just confirmed that two of the people who died in the shooting were Jeffrey Blixt, 45, who lived in the home, and his son Matthew Blixt, 17, who did not live in the home. They have not formally released the identity of the others yet. Instead, they have identified them only as a 34-year-old woman and two 15-year-old girls.

Flexi-workers are a twist we can ill afford

Working flexibly is good for families and good for mothers, but it is not good for employers. With the best of goodwill on all sides, flexitime will always cause problems. Some employers may be large enough to bear the inevitable costs and inconveniences. The public services will be protected from such commercial realities by the state and the taxpayer. But that does not change the unpleasant fact that flexible working imposes costs and inefficiencies on almost all employers and the economy as a whole.

Despite this obvious fact, more and more women now see flexible working as a human right. Men are beginning to do so, too. Politicians agree: both Gordon Brown and David Cameron are anxious to oblige. Downing Street announced last week an inquiry into extending the right to flexible working (currently restricted to parents of children under six) to parents of children under nine, 12 or even 17.

Anandpur resolution caused turmoil: CM

Although the death of six persons, including four children, in a tragic mishap near Rarra Sahib in Ludhiana yesterday morning has prompted the Punjab Police to ban goods carriers trucks and tractor-trailers from carrying passengers, little has been done over the years to minimise the loss of life on the roads of the state.

Both trucks and tractor-trailers are frequently used to ferry pilgrims and others to various religious festivals and melas held in the state throughout the year. Besides, these vehicles are also used to carry workers to political rallies.

How effectively the police is able to enforce the ban remains to be seen as the Assembly elections in Punjab are round the corner.

Yesterday morning, a truck carrying 40-odd pilgrims was on the way to a historic place when it fell into a canal near Rarra Sahib killing six persons on the spot.

Lt. Col. Kerry MacNeal's e-mails from Iraq

We arrived at Camp Echo under cover of darkness on a Blackhawk helicopter to our forward operating base (FOB) at Camp Echo, South of Baghdad, in Qadisiyah Province. This is a coalition forces outpost of 13 nations led by the Polish Army Division. This base has so many functions and diverse operations. Even more amazing is the collection of multi-national forces including soldiers from Mongolia, Poland, Denmark, El Salvador, Ukraine, Latvia, etc. I have never encountered such a polite collection of humanity - of course, it could be because everyone is armed to the teeth.

So many projects, so little time.

One reason the economy is dysfunctional is the pillars of Iraqi society are not cooperating very closely. The Provincial Government, the Iraqi Army, Iraqi Police and Tribal Leaders all regard each other with some degree of suspicion and do not share power easily.
