| Ex-con:ID theft can be prevented
Sparks resident Angela Cady knows firsthand the harm identity theft causes. "Identity theft is like murder. You're murdering that person's identity -- everything that they are on paper," she said. "It's really sad what it can do to people, how long it takes them to get their life straight again." More than 11.8 million Americans have been affected by identity theft since April 2004, according to the Sparks Police Department, which is holding a free identity theft prevention course Wednesday night. Information also will be provided on the appropriate steps for victims of ID theft to take. Cady isn't a victim. She spent six years in prison for stealing someone's identity and, having learned from her experience, shared her story to help others protect themselves.
Thwart thieves by freezing credit
When it comes to keeping a thief from obtaining credit in your name, consumers have a tough weapon in the form of a so-called security freeze. When you freeze your credit report, you thwart would-be thieves by preventing creditors from checking your credit history. Few lenders will lend you – or a thief – money without first checking your credit report. Texans got added muscle in September, when a new law took effect that allows consumers to freeze their credit report without first having to have a police report. Previously, Texans couldn't freeze their credit reports unless they were victims of identity theft. .

Governor�s Crime Commission, Nov.28-30 at the Sea Trail Conference Center, Sunset Beach. Other speakers include first lady Mary Easley, Director Domingo Herriaz of the U.S. Bureau of Justice Assistance and Texas Rep. Ted Poe, head of the Congressional Victim�s Caucus. The Governor�s Crime Commission�s three-day conference will host workshops on current trends, strategies, and effective practices concerning topics such as gangs, drugs, identity theft, elder crime, and campus and community security.

Troops may soon be 'not fit for purpose'
Professor Anthony Forster, co-author of Out of Step: the case for change in the British armed forces, said: "Iraq and Afghanistan have become an obsession. Most expenditure is going on what the military calls 'platform' expenditure - very expensive aircraft carriers, for instance - when the priority should be human issues such as salaries, the chronic and appalling state of housing and support for families whose loved ones are overseas. If the priorities do not change then Iraq and Afghanistan may spell the end because generals, admirals and air marshals will be left with armed forces that are not fit for purpose." But Sir Clive Fairweather, a former deputy leader of the SAS, challenged the report's findings saying it was "simplistic" and ignored the basic tenets of the armed forces.
