Attackers used belts, lighters on teen

Dave Wilson opened the door of his home in Dartmouth, N.S., late last week to find a girl dripping with blood, pleading for help.

"She had blood all down her arms, all down the front of her shirt, all down her pants," he told reporters Friday.

Wilson was the first person to see the 18-year-old after a brutal crime that has shocked residents and has some calling for tougher penalties for young offenders.

Three teenagers — also females — are charged with assaulting the girl behind John Martin Jr. High School, beating and burning her over a two-hour period on Sept. 20.

When Wilson saw her just before midnight, he knew it was a brutal attack.

The girl was shoeless. Her face was cut, bloodied and so swollen that she handed him her cellphone so he could talk to the 911 operator, Wilson said.

Merry Christmas and blah, blah, blah

It wasn't the perfect family portrait in front of the fireplace or tree (still the most popular holiday photo pose, according to Shutterfly statistics) but it was a down-to-earth Peace on Earth.

"Ideas like that take some of the pressure off," Olson said. "You don't have to have the perfect family picture where everyone is smiling and everyone looks equally good."

Jamie and Jay Watson of San Carlos, Calif., created a holiday photo card last year that friends and family displayed for months. The couple had been regaling people with stories about a persistent squirrel that seemed to think of the Watsons' new home as its own. So one day they lured the squirrel -- nicknamed Willie -- into their living room and took a photo of him near a Santa hat on their sofa.

Both rebel forces have carried out widespread murder and rape.

With the Rwandan government covertly supporting Nkunda and the Congolese administration accused of backing the FDLR, the seeds of another regional war are being sown.

Congo remembers the last one only too well.

Lynne Abraham Offers Tips For Safe Shopping

Black Friday" marks the beginning of the busy holiday shopping season, and District Attorney Lynne Abraham and Chief Inspector Anthony DiLacqua remind everyone that it's a busy time of year for criminals as well as holiday shoppers.

"There is always somebody looking to separate you from your money," said District Attorney Lynne Abraham. "The best course of action is prevention."

"Many thieves choose their victims because the thieves see an opportunity," said Chief Inspector DiLacqua. "If you take away the opportunity, chances are you won't become a victim."

Online:

1. Use a credit card rather than a debit card for online shopping. Most credit cards cap your liability at $50, whereas there may not be a cap with a debit card, which is an open invitation to your entire bank account.

Met laptops theft puts 15,000 at risk

Three laptops containing Metropolitan Police payroll details have been stolen from LogicaCMG, the UK IT services company.

The burglary took place last Thursday evening but was discovered by staff arriving for work at Logica's Southwark offices on Friday morning. Approximately half of the Met Police's employees are thought to have been affected. The Met is in the process of notifying its employees of the theft.

LogicaCMG processes the Met's payroll and pensions. The Met declined to comment on exactly what details had been stolen, or confirm how many employees had been affected, due to the nature of the ongoing investigation. Sources close to the inquiry have claimed the laptops contained the payroll and pension details of more than 15,000 Metropolitan Police officers.
