Vick sentenced to 23 months in dogfighting case

Vick was dressed in a black-and-white striped prison suit and apologized to the court and his family. Hudson responded, ``You need to apologize to the millions of young people who looked up to you.'' ``Yes, sir,'' Vick said. Vick acknowledged he used ``poor judgment'' and added, ``I'm willing to deal with the consequences and accept responsibility for my actions.'' Before the hearing started, Michael Vick's brother, Marcus Vick, sat with his right arm around their mother, comforting her as she buried her head in her hands and wept. Vick pleaded guilty in August, admitting he bankrolled the ``Bad Newz Kennels'' dogfighting operation and helped kill six to eight dogs. In a plea agreement, he admitted bankrolling the dogfighting ring on his 15-acre property in rural southeastern Virginia and helping kill pit bulls that did not perform well in test fights.

Tax 'giveaway' already in use by up to 500,000 couples

The Treasury says that back-dating will benefit about three million people across the UK.

But the Labour plan appeared to run into serious trouble after financial advisers quickly pointed out that existing tax laws already allow many couples to share their allowances.

By some estimates, as many as 500,000 couples have made arrangements to do so, by altering their wills to each pass £300,000 to their descendants.

Carolyn Steppler, UK tax director at KPMG, an accountancy firm, said: "This change, although likely to grab headlines, is in practice only giving to most people what they already have."

Tom Munro, a Larbert-based independent financial adviser, described Mr Darling's plans as "a joke".

He said: "Couples who set up their will correctly already benefit from the use of two nil-rate bands so the new proposals are effectively the same as what is in place at the moment.

Activists in Jensen Beach claim they are getting SLAPPed with lawsuit

Activists with the Jensen Beach Group say they've been "slapped" — and they've asked State Rep. William Snyder to help outlaw what's known as Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation.

The request stems from a 2006 lawsuit Jensen Beach developer Bill Reily, of Reily Enterprises, filed against the nonprofit activist organization and several individuals.
